Dit jaar wordt Museum Gouda 150 jaar! Het museum begon met ruim duizend voorwerpen die Gouwenaars inbrachten na een oproep in de krant. Deze ‘Goudsche Oudheden’ werden tentoongesteld in het gebouw Arti Legi aan de Markt ter ere van het 600-jarig bestaan van de stad. De tentoonstelling was zo’n succes dat er in 1874 een stedelijk museum werd opgericht. In deze zaal krijg je een beeld van hoe het museum er in het begin uitzag. De voorwerpen van toen vormen nog altijd de kern van onze bijzondere collectie.

Goudse straffen
Volgens een catalogus uit 1885 was een van museumzalen aan de Goudse Markt gewijd aan de straf- en folterwerktuigen van de stad. Hiertoe behoorden onder andere een wurgpaal, de stadsgalg, een executiezwaard en de pijnbank. Ook deze zeventiende-eeuwse bijl was daar te zien. Het was de executiebijl ‘waarmede de hand van een meineedige werd afgehakt’. Vele Gouwenaars die als kind in het museum zijn geweest, hebben levendige herinneringen aan de straf- en folter- werktuigen. Ze zijn nog altijd te zien in de kelders onder de Gasthuiskapel.

This year, Museum Gouda celebrates its 150th birthday! The museum started with over a thousand objects that Gouda citizens contributed after an appeal in the local newspaper. These ‘Gouda Antiquities’ were exhibited in the Arti Legi building on the Markt in honour of the city’s 600th anniversary. The exhibition was such a success that a municipal museum was established in 1874. This room gives you an idea of what the museum looked like in the beginning. The objects from back then still form the core of our extraordinary collection.

Gouda punishments
According to an 1885 catalogue, one of the museum rooms at Gouda Markt was dedicated to the city’s punishment and torture instruments. These included a garrotte, the city gallows, an execution sword and the rack. This seventeenth- century axe was also on display there. It was the execution axe ‘with which the hand of a perjurer was cut off’. Many Gouda residents who visited the museum as children have vivid memories of the punishment and torture instruments. They can still be seen in the cellars under the Gasthuiskapel.
